Perspective
on Work
Benedictine
spirituality requires and offers balance. Chapter 48 of The Rule of
Benedict details daily manual labor within a monastic community, and it
offers insight into the power of spirituality. The language is direct
and the interpretation powerful. As people become consumed by what they
do, the Rule reminds us that taking time to read, reflect and seek the
presence of God is a pathway to enlightened living in the here and now.

Contemplative
living
for
contemporary times
You are invited to continue your spiritual journey through
contemplative living, which is an approach to personal development and
transformation. Contemplative living is grounded in everyday experience
and enables a deep awareness of God’s presence in our lives.
This
fall, Benedictine Women of Madison offers a 6-part discussion series on
Bridges to Contemplative Living
with Thomas Merton. Beginning September 11th and
continuing every other Tuesday through November 20th, men and women
listen to one another and learn from their shared experience of prayer
and informal conversation. Each session begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends by
8:30 p.m. Cost is $125 for the series, which is facilitated by
Jerrianne Bland, spiritual guide and spirituality coordinator for
Benedictine Women of Madison.

The
ministry of money
Joan
Chittister, OSB, writes that true philanthropists “who have worked hard
to make their own money, know the grace, the call, the power of giving
it away ... they know the spiritual secret of giving that makes the
future possible.”
As
we continue on our faith journey, exploring the role and relationship
of money in our personal and collective lives is part of that process.
We benefit when we take time to explore its place as people of
God. Decisions about money offer outlets to express our deeply
held values and move our spiritual life toward action and impact. Money
can be used to enable, seed and uplift a vision that makes life better
for others. If you’d like to explore more on-line resources, visit the

Celebrating
care for the earth
Benedictine
Women of Madison encourages all to experience the deep satisfaction of
caring for creation in the ways most meaningful to them. For many it is
walking the land, for others it is volunteering their time and for some
it is donating financially to preserve its future. Recently,
Benedictine Women of Madison and Benedictine Life Foundation recognized
people who have committed at least $5,000 to the Environmental
Endowment and become members of the AcreMaker Club. A section of the
prairie has been dedicated in their honor. Anyone interested
in supporting environmental preservation, restoration and education is
encouraged to consider a gift to the Environmental Endowment. All
amounts make a big difference in preserving the beauty of Holy Wisdom
Monastery for this generation and the next.
